Nathan Capp showed encouraging form on the second day of the Australian Grand Prix meet in Townsville.
Capp was among a number of Kiwi swimmers competing as they prepare for major upcoming meets including the world championships and world university games.
The Greerton swimmer, part of Swimming New Zealand’s high performance squad, clocked 8:02.89 to finish second behind Australian five-time world junior champion Mack Horton.
Capp was locked in a battle with Horton for the first half of the race before the Australian edged ahead to win in 7:59.
Across the Pacific, double Olympian Glenn Snyders finished sixth in the 100m breaststroke on day two of the Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara. The US-based Snyders went 1:02.18 in the final as he builds to the world championship.
Meanwhile Lauren Boyle, following her outstanding effort in the 1500m yesterday, has qualified third fastest in the 400m freestyle in 4:08.89 behind former world 800m champion Lotte Friis and Hungary’s multi- world champion Katinka Hosszu, who went on to break the US record in heats of the 400m individual medley.
Kiwi open water swimmers were off the pace in the latest round of the FINA/HOSA 10km Marathon Swim World Cup in Hungary.
Taranaki’s Charlotte Webby was 19th in the women’s race in 1:54.53, won by double world championship medallist Ana Marcela Cunha in 1:50.36.
Rotorua’s Kane Radford was the best of the Kiwi men at Balatfured in 27th place in 1:44.15, won by in-form Brit Jack Burnell, who won the Mexico round last month.
Auckland’s Phillip Ryan (Waterhole) was 40th in 1:46.50 and Waikato’s Troy Balvert (St Peters) 52nd in 1:49.17.
The Kiwis will compete in round six of the 11-round series in Setubal (Portugal) next weekend.
