New Zealand Swimming Alumni – Zonal Emerging Swimmers of the Year

Awarded to an emerging (up and coming) swimmer from each of the four zones who has excelled within the qualifying period in Olympic events Long Course or Short Course. Nominees must be under the age of 19 as at 31 December of the award year

 


New Zealand Swimming Alumni – Norma Williams MBE Emerging Swimmer of the Year

Norma Williams

At the 1950 British Empire Games Norma William won the silver medal as part of the women's 440-yard freestyle relay, her teammates in the relay were Winifred Griffin, Joan Hastings and Kristin Jacobi.

Williams won six national swimming titles: the 400 yards women's medley in 1948, 1949 and 1950; and the 100 yards women's butterfly in 1949, 1950 and 1951.

She was a chaperone with the New Zealand team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, and was appointed as a national swimming selector in 1978 to 2004.

She also served as the president of the Auckland Amateur Sports Association. Williams' book, Between the Lanes, which chronicles the development of competitive swimming in New Zealand, was published in 1996, she also wrote histories to mark the centennials of the New Zealand Swimming Federation in 1990 and the Auckland Swimming Association in 2006.

In the 1977 New Year Honours Williams was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to swimming.

In 1988 she was made a Life Member of Swimming New Zealand.

 

Awarded to an emerging (up and coming) swimmer who has excelled within the qualifying period in Olympic events Long Course or Short Course. The winner of this award will be selected from the winners of the Zonal Emerging Swimmers of the year.

 


Swimming New Zealand Duncan Laing Performance Swimming Club of the Year

Duncan Laing, CNZM OBE (20 June 1933 – 13 September 2008), was a New Zealand swimming coach based in Dunedin. He coached Olympian Danyon Loader, winner of two gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a silver medal at Barcelona in 1992. He began teaching at Moana Pool in 1966, and over forty years training in Dunedin included 11 Olympic athletes. He was awarded the OBE in 1993 and made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in June 2006.

 

The Duncan Laing Trophy is awarded to the Club with the most combined points from the New Zealand Short Course Championships, New Zealand Age Group Championships, and the New Zealand Open Championships within a calendar year.

  


Swimming New Zealand Jackie Clarke Volunteer of the Year

Jackie Clarke was the SNZ Director of Coaching from 1981-1983 and President from 1987-1988. She was the President who convened the Annual meeting when, the New Zealand Swimming Federation was changed over to as it now, Swimming New Zealand. Originally from the Wharenui Club, she then joined Howick Pakuranga in the 1980s.

The Jackie Clarke award was originally for the Administrator of the Year. It was mainly to recognise the volunteer secretaries of the regions.

 

Awarded to a volunteer who has displayed outstanding commitment and dedication to swimming either to SNZ, an SNZ Region, or SNZ Club in administration during the last calendar year.

  


Swimming New Zealand Bill Matson ONZM Technical Official of the Year

William (Bill) L. Matson ONZM (1933-2011) was involved in swimming administration for over 40 years, and was a former SNZ President (1990-1991) and Life Member of Swimming New Zealand. He also served on the New Zealand Olympic Committee board. He was also President of the Oceania Swimming Association from its inception in 1991 until 2008. Bill was elected to FINA in 1996 and again in 2000 as a member of 22-strong FINA Bureau. In 2005 and 2009, he was elected to the Bureau as vice president. Matson was also FINA's protocol officer from 1997-2009.

 

Awarded for outstanding contribution by a technical official.

  


Swimming New Zealand Annette Kellerman Open Water Swimmer of the Year

This trophy was first presented in 1922 in Napier for the three-mile open water swim. Kellerman donated the Cup to Swimming New Zealand in December 1921. Born in Australia in 1887, she was one of the first women to wear a one-piece bathing costume, instead of the then-accepted pantaloons. She appeared in several movies, usually with aquatic themes, and as the star of A Daughter of the Gods was the first major actress to appear nude in a Hollywood production.

 

Awarded to an open water swimmer who has excelled in open water events within the qualifying period.

  


Domestic Swimmer of the Year

Awarded to a swimmer who has excelled in long and/or short course competition(s) in New Zealand within the qualifying period.

 


Swimming New Zealand Coach of the Year

Awarded for outstanding contribution by a coach within the qualifying period. The award will consider swimming performances, broader services to the sport and the relationship with the swimming community.

  


Swimming New Zealand Billie Fitzsimmons MBE International Swimmer of the Year

Mrs D (Billie) Fitzsimmons MBE was made a Life Member of Swimming Wellington in 1975 & Swimming New Zealand in 1984, She had significant involvement in the Wanganui East and Wellington Swimming Clubs, Wellington Swimming Centre and for many years represented Swimming NZ on the NZ Olympic & Commonwealth Games Association (now NZOC).  Billie acted as Women’s Manager to the Perth Commonwealth Games and later Munich Olympic Games Teams.  Her aquatic connections extended to Wellington Ladies SLSC, Surf Lifesaving NZ and Water Safety NZ

She appreciated how challenging it was for NZ Swimmers to succeed in the international arena which led to her wanting to recognise such achievement each year.

 

Awarded to the individual with the most outstanding international performance of the year in the international competitions listed.

  


Swimming New Zealand Baxter O’Neill Swimmer of the Year

The Trophy is named after Baxter O’Neill who was the secretary of the NZASA for 42 years 1918-1959. Baxter O’Neill was the president of Swimming New Zealand from 1947-1949.

The first to receive it was 1958 Commonwealth Games butterfly silver medallist Tessa Staveley

  •          Para Swimmer of the Year
  •          Annette Kellerman Open Water Swimmer of the Year

Harold Pettit Trophy

The Harold Pettit Trophy is awarded for the most outstanding individual performance, in an Open event, at the New Zealand Open Championships.

 


Life Members Trophy

The Life Members trophy is awarded for the most outstanding individual performance at the New Zealand Age Group Championships.

 


Hansells Trophy

The Hansells Trophy is awarded to the swimmer who breaks an existing New Zealand Age Group Record by the greatest percentage margin at the New Zealand Age Group Championships.

 


Roland St Clair Memorial Cup

The Roland St Clair memorial cup is awarded to the Men’s 10km Open Water Champion.

 


Auntie Brown Cup

The Auntie Brown cup is awarded to the Women’s 10km Open Water Champion.

 


Yaldhurst Shield

The Yaldhurst Shield is awarded to the highest scoring region for championships won at the New Zealand Open Championships.

 


1914-1918 War Memorial Shield

The War Memorial shield is awarded to the highest scoring Region for championships won at the New Zealand Age Group Championships.

 


Freyberg Shield

The Freyberg shield is awarded to the highest points scoring Region at the New Zealand Age Group Championships and New Zealand Open Championships.

 


Sir Denis Blundell Trophy

The Sir Denis Blundell trophy is awarded to the highest points scoring Region at the Division II Competition
