Welcome to the Education section of Swimming New Zealand

Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) has a national commitment to Water Safety and Swimming Education. We achieve this by providing Professional Development (PD) to School Teachers and through swim teacher education utilising AUSTSWIM courses and qualifications.

Our regionally based education team provide Professional Development opportunities to Primary School Teachers at schools with pools throughout New Zealand. These professional development sessions are based on a mixture of dry sessions and poolside support sessions. All of our PD sessions are based on Water Skills for Life which is recognised across New Zealand as the foundation program for Water Safety and Learn to Swim education.

In partnership with AUSTSWIM, we offer swim teacher education throughout New Zealand. AUSTSWIM is the recognised leader in formal swim teacher education in Australasia and we are proud to offer their suite of courses to swimming teachers across the country. Courses are delivered by a mixture of presenters including SNZ education team, in-house presenters of large swim schools and external contracted presenters. We offer 5 courses including “Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety” which is the basic course and once completed will give the candidate their AUSTSWIM licence. The remaining courses are extension courses and can be completed once a candidate has gained their AUSTSWIM licence, these courses include Infants, Access and Inclusion, Adults and Teacher of competitive strokes. In partnership with Skills Active Aotearoa we are able to offer level 3 and level 4 qualifications for swim teachers.

We also offer a comprehensive range of training and advice directly related to the operation of either small or large aquatic facilities. This training and advice included:

Water treatment. Including a 1 day or 2-day option depending on individual requirements
Business review of both Swim Schools or Aquatic Facilities
Risk Management Plans
Emergency Plans
Health and Safety Plans
Lifeguard Training and Assessment
Chemical Handling
Operational reviews
