National champion Nathan Capp produced a respectable performance to finish 21st fastest in heats of the 1500m freestyle on the penultimate day of the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
The Tauranga swimmer clocked 15:17.77, just two seconds outside his national record, in heats today.
Capp, part of Swimming New Zealand’s High Performance Squad, was on national record pace to the 1100m mark but his pace slowed a fraction before finishing strongly over the final 100m.
The 23 year old will now re-set his focus for tomorrow’s final day, when he competes in the 400m individual medley.
Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri lived up to his world number one ranking to lead qualifiers on 14:51.04 but world number two ranked Mack Horton (AUS) has missed out on the final, after missing out on the 400m freestyle earlier in the championships.
