The start of something extraordinary

Metro Sports Facility/Taiwhanga Rēhia

An exciting new sports centre is in the pipeline for Christchurch. Plans for the Metro Sports Facility/Taiwhanga Rēhia, a project that has stemmed from the Christchurch rebuild are expected to begin at the end of 2015.

The Recovery Plan describes the Metro Sports Facility/Taiwhanga Rēhia as: A top-class venue and centre of excellence, accessible to people of all ages, abilities and sporting skills. Providing aquatic, indoor sports and leisure facilities, it will cater for the day-to-day needs of the recreational, educational and high-performance sporting communities, and also host national and international events.

The Facility will be conveniently located in central Christchurch, close to other sporting facilities, and easy to access by public transport, private vehicle and new walking and cycling links.

The sports centre will house an indoor aquatic hall which will include a competition pool (79m 10-lane) with bulkheads and moveable floor. There will also be a programme pool, warm water pool, leisure pool, hydroslides, spa, sauna, steam room, outdoor hot pools, water multi-sensory facility, marshalling area and additional function, VIP and competition control areas.

Since the earthquake Canterbury swimmers have had to make major adjustments to their training and competition schedules with no long course pool available in the area they travel to Dunedin each year to hold the Canterbury Long Course Championships. The new facility will be a welcome sight for the swimming community.
