Butterfly, it is never too late to learn

Teaching adults is as we know, incredibly different to teaching children.  It is vital that we listen to the swimmers wants and then come up with achievable goals together, along with a plan to reach those goals.  It is not often that we get the chance to teach butterfly to adult swimmers yet Joi Reading from Quality Swim School, Swimsation Dunedin got to do just that. 

None of the adult swimmers (all over the age of 45) knew how to swim butterfly and fair doubted they could achieve this challenge; “it resembled a wasp in the final death throes after a dose of Raid!  I needed oxygen and a packed lunch at the end of 25 metres such was the effort invested” said Lynette Jones, 59. 

Thankfully Joi had recently attended Swimming New Zealand’s School Age and Adult Swim Teacher Award course where she learnt to plan and conduct a developmental series of swimming lessons in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly for school age and adult swimmers which assisted her in planning the classes. 

Each swimmer was incredibly happy with the results that they have achieved over the lessons and praised Joi’s teaching for enabling them to achieve swimming 25m of butterfly “Joi was of great assistance to one and all in the squad” Bill Evans 64.  Proving that with great instruction, a will and lots of perfect practice, it is never too late to achieve a new skill.  Joi did such a great job with her adult swimmers that some of them have incorporated butterfly into their individual weekly swimming programmes.
