Swim teachers from four Wellington swim schools have begun their journey to becoming qualified in teaching learn to swim to under 5s.
Swimming New Zealand’s Early Childhood Swim Teacher Award focuses on making sure swim teachers have the skills for teaching baby and pre-school classes.
Now parents with their under 5s at Easyswim, Swim City, Ally Todd Swimming and Wellington City Council’s swim school can be assured these swim teachers are providing the best possible lessons in line with the physical and emotional development of their children.
Like most Swimming New Zealand education courses the one course day included a theory session supplemented by a pool session where participants were able to put all they had learnt into practise.
Games, songs, activities and laughter were aplenty throughout the day with all participants reporting they had new ideas to take away to their swim schools.
The play dough activity in which participants need to explain how to make a creature to their partners was particularly popular with some finding creative ways to explain how to make playdough seahorses and dinosaurs.
The next job for the participants is to complete their post course assignments and be practically assessed before being awarded their qualification.
