Year 11 students from Waihi College have been helping their younger school mates learn how to keep themselves safer in and around the water.
Taking part in a Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) Assistant Swim Teacher Award Course in October this year the students have been able to take their new found knowledge in Term 4 to assist with swim lessons at the school.
After making such good progress with the Year 7 and 8 students the high school extended an offer to the local primary school, Waihi Central School, for their students to be included in the lessons.
The school plans to continue lessons with all Waihi primary schools in Term One next year.
The teachers at Waihi Central School have been so impressed with the level of teaching their students are receiving they have also welcomed the opportunity to give the children extra lessons at the Waihi College school pool inside school hours.
Lessons for students in Waihi Township are extremely important as the children are only 10 minutes from Waihi Beach.
With 22 students taking part in the swim teacher course and helping out with lessons the class sizes are able to be kept small so students are getting a high quality lesson.
Waihi Central Primary School has been a Kiwi Swim Safe School since 2011 and has recently had a workshop and poolside assistance from Wendy Smith, SNZ Education Advisor for the Waikato region.
