Merrin School in Canterbury have welcomed summer with a celebration day focussed on keeping safe in the water.
Swimming New Zealand was invited along to the school’s Summer Celebration Day and hosted a number of water safety lessons throughout the day.
The lessons included how to fit a life jacket properly, discussions about never swimming along and having adult supervision, swimming between the flags at the beach and what to do if someone was in trouble in the water.
During the lunch break senior students at the school ran summer games and water activities, including water obstacle courses, treasure hunts and water fights, with the Merrin School PTA providing a sausage sizzle.
The idea for the day followed on from a parent education meeting earlier in the year that aimed to engage more of the school’s students into learning to swim and taking lessons at their local Quality Swim School, Canterbury Swim School.
This was a great day for students to be part of learning that water is great fun in the summer as long as you are prepared and enjoy it safely.
