National champion Bobbi Gichard got the third session of the State 2013 Secondary School Championships underway with a meet record in the 200m backstroke.
Gichard smashed eight seconds off the previous 13 year old girl’s record to win her age group comfortably. Avonside Girls High School student Kelly Scammell joined Gichard in record breaking form clocking 2:22.86 to win the 16-18 year age group.
Fourteen meet records in individual events fell this morning to Gichard, Scammell, Josh Pickett, Erik Kahr, Gabrielle Fa’amausili, Genevieve Bowler, Jordan Wilson, Joshua Taylor-Martin, Devlin Forsythe, Liam Albery, Caitlin Deans, Yeonsu Lee, Abigail Chapman, and Monique King.
The SKINS events were hotly contested with Pakuranga College student Paige Schendelaar-Kemp winning the 50m butterfly and 17 year old Julian Weir (New Plymouth Boys High School) taking out the 50m backstroke.
The battle between the schools continues this afternoon with the fourth session starting at 4pm at Waterworld, Te Rapa, Hamilton.
