The pilot event of the Swimming New Zealand Zonal Championship will take place on the 4th of October, the day following the State 2013 New Zealand Short Course Championships.
Following this year’s event all aspects of the championship will be reviewed to produce an event that is both attractive to sponsors and media agencies, as well as being beneficial to the on-going performance and development of our swimmers.
Selection events were staged within each Zone between August 24 and September 1. North Zone swimmers vied for selection at the Auckland Winter Championships, Central North Zone candidates raced at the Bay of Plenty Short Course Championships, while the Lower North Zone swimmers raced for a spot on the team at the Wellington Short Course Championships, and the South Zone competed strongly at the South Island Championships.
Team selections for each Zone are currently being processed with official team announcements due in the coming days.
Team names for each Zone have been selected including – Harlequins (Northland, Auckland, Counties), AquaKnights (Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay), All Stars (Wellington, Manawatu), and the Mako’s (Nelson/Marlborough, Canterbury West Coast, Otago, Southland).
Each Zonal team is made up of 20 junior and 20 senior swimmers with 10 male and 10 female swimmers in each group. Each swimmer may swim in 3 individual events in addition to relays.
