Mary Fisher continued the outstanding performances of the New Zealand team on the second day at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal. Fisher has now secured two gold medals from as many starts at the championship, and has brought the NZ total to three gold medals after just two days.
The second gold for the 20 year old Fisher of Wellington was secured in a new Oceania record (31.36 seconds) in the women’s 50m freestyle S11, as she was followed home by China’s Guizhi Li and Swede Maija Reichard in silver and bronze.
In the men’s 100m breaststroke SB13 Daniel Sharp touched in 1min 10.01 seconds to be edged out of the medals into fourth place. Sharp came into the event on the back of a silver medal in the discipline at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Also in action during the day was Jesse Reynolds of Hamilton who got his international swimming career underway with 6th place in his heat of the SM9 Men's 200 Individual Medley.
Jon Shaw (Head Swim Performance Coach, Paralympics New Zealand) says, “It was another great day in the pool for our team as we continued to grow our medal tally and saw our newest team member Jesse Reynolds compete.”
