Championship records continued to fall on day two of the World University Games, reinforcing the high calibre of competition present. A number of international swimmers are using the meet as preparation for the World Championships which begin on 24 July.
Two-time Olympian Hayley Palmer was the top performer from the New Zealand team overnight. She advanced through to the semi-finals in the 100m freestyle, but was unable to improve on her morning performance, posting a time of 56.81 to finish 15th.
Personal best times were set by Laura Quilter and Matthew Glassford in the heats of their respective events. Quilter swam slightly slower than Palmer in the heats of the 100m freestyle, narrowly missing the semi-final, but producing a best ever time of 56.45. Glassford stepped up in the 200m Individual Medley, an event that falls outside his specialist breaststroke, to finish with a 2.08.09.
Day three action kicks off at 5pm this evening and includes: Kate Godfrey (200m Individual Medley), Emily McGill (200m Individual Medley), Matthew Glassford (200m Breaststroke), Laura Quilter (100m Backstroke), Kate Godfrey (100m Backstroke), Charlotte Webby (1500m Freestyle).
