One of the smallest teams who travelled the furthest took the major honours in the State 2013 New Zealand Division II Competition that finished in Invercargill last night.
Bream Bay from Northland finished the four day meet at Splash Palace at the top of the team ratings, venturing south with nine swimmers who bagged 33 medals between them with 15 gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals.
They finished on 1112 points ahead of Jasi on 946.5, fellow Christchurch club Wharenui on 666, Ace from Hamilton on 584 and North Canterbury on 530 in the age competition for swimmers 13 to 18 years.
The leading individuals in the girls’ competition were Waikato’s Hayley Miller and Dunedin’s Devon Familton both winning eight medals, with Miller (ACE) including six gold medals, an honor she shared with Ruby Matthews from Otumoetai in Tauranga.
Levin’s Shawn O’Hara was the leading male with 11 medals ahead of Kieran Swords (Bream Bay) and Campbell Kershaw (North Canterbury) who both finished with nine medals. Kershaw, 15, won eight gold medals in a superb display, two on each night of the competition, to go along with one silver from his nine swims.
O’Hara finished with six gold medals, one ahead of Swords and Tawa’s Josh Kemp in the competition that attracted 2000 event entries from 72 clubs.
