Paralympics stars Sophie Pascoe and Mary Fisher set world records on the third morning of the State New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland this morning.
Pascoe, 20, from the QEII club in Christchurch clocked 29.21s in the 50m butterfly which broke the previous world record of 29.57s. The brilliant Canterbury swimmer set the previous world record in London.
Her fellow paralympics gold medallist Fisher, 20, from Wellington’s Capital Club, was timed at 34.35s in the same event to break her own world record of 35.12 which she also set in London.
Fisher went on to be fastest in heats of the 200m individual medley in 2:54.25, outside the world record.
US-based Glenn Snyders went under the FINA A qualifying time for the world championships when he topped qualifiers in the heats of the men’s 50m breaststroke.
The 25 year old clocked 27.41s in the 50m breaststroke which was more than half a second inside the qualifying mark for Barcelona, after he qualified for the 100m earlier in the meet.
He was 0.4s outside his own national record.
In other swims world champion Lauren Boyle topped qualifiers in heats of the women’s 200m freestyle in a time of 1:59.07, the only swimmer under the two minute mark for tonight’s finals.
Fellow North Shore swimmer Shaun Burnett swam a personal best 1:58.93 to be fastest in heats of the 200m butterfly, under two seconds outside the qualifying time for the world championships.
The third night of finals starts at 6.30pm tonight.
