Meet the team for Glasgow 2014 - Sophie Pascoe & Nikita Howarth

Para Swimming golden girls Sophie Pascoe and Nikita Howarth are the only two Para-Swimmers that will be representing New Zealand at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Sophie has a long list of achievements in her swimming career including a number of world records.

Earlier in her career she was the dominant medal winner at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, hauling in 3 gold and 1 silver.

She went on to be awarded the international award for the Best Debut Performance of any athlete at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and was voted New Zealand’s favourite Paralympian for 2008.

In more recent times Sophie claimed five titles at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships and was awarded the 2013 Halberg Award for Disabled Sportsperson of the Year for the third year in a row.

Sophie will be competing in the SM10 200m IM and SB9 100m Breaststroke at Glasgow.

Nikita is the youngest member of the Glasgow 2014 swim team for New Zealand and is looking forward to the Games.

“I am feeling excited and can’t wait to experience being with a team of able bodied athletes.

"My preparations have been going well as I feel I am ready to compete at the highest level possible,” she said.

Nikita competed in her first major international meet in 2011 at the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships.

She won two medals (Silver and Bronze) in the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke respectively.

The following year she was the youngest ever Paralympian to represent New Zealand at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Nikita will be competing in the S8 100m Freestyle at Glasgow.
