A recent Kiwi Swim Safe workshop in the Manawatu has taught schools how best to utilise their time, pool and resources to run effective swim and survive sessions for their students.
Tiritea School and Russell St School were visited by Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison to support teachers on poolside, following on from their theory session.
The classes were very well run with all children in the pool at once – making lane ropes for the pool was the main idea the teachers took from their session and have commented on how much of a difference it makes to their lessons by allowing children to learn through structured play with parent helpers before spending quality time with their teachers.
The teachers are working really hard on the basic fundamental skills their children are learning and are investing plenty of time into developing their submersion, floating and gliding skills.
All of the teachers were very capable at running classes that catered for all levels and included many opportunities for the students to participate in games and activities with their peers.
The students were also visited by Koru the Kiwi who they have begun to become familiar with through the Kiwi Swim Safe certificates they are all receiving for their efforts.
Russell St School are running their swimming sports event in early March and the teachers and parents are looking forward to seeing how much the children have progressed.
