The club without their own pool, QEII have again won the top club prize at the State New Zealand Junior Swimming Championships today.
The QEII Swim Club dominated the two-day competition held jointly at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre at Kilbirnie and the Westwave Aquatic Centre in Waitakere, Auckland.
The club lost the use of their pool in the earthquakes, and currently use the facilities at Jellie Park. They were top club last year and repeated that effort in a strong performance with 1028 points ahead of the powerful North Shore club with 688, United (Auckland) 546, Stratford 508, Coast (Whangaparaoa) 501, King’s (Auckland) 429, Otumoetai (Tauranga) 370, Howick Pakuranga 341, SwimZone (Hutt Valley) 324 and Wharenui (Christchurch) 321. The championships attracted a record 92 clubs.
“We are delighted with the development of this meet,” said Swimming New Zealand Events Manager Kent Stead.
“Not only are we seeing more clubs but the overall numbers of entries and depth of talent is improving.
“It was an outstanding effort from QEII to back up from last year and tremendous considering their challenges both as a swim club and in general in the city.”
Leading individual was 11 year old Gina Galloway from Kings Swim Club in Auckland who won nine gold medals and one silver in a brilliant display.
Her overall tally of 10 medals was equalled by Thomas Wilson (QEII) with seven gold, two silver and one bronze and Kyra Forrest from Wharenui who enjoyed seven gold medals and three bronze.
Best of the North Shore swimmers were Sungju Kim with five gold and two silver and Bailey Wang with four gold, a silver and a bronze.
