Waikato teenager Georgina McCarthy has won the first medal for New Zealand on the second day of the Australian Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide.
McCarthy, who swims for the Hillcrest club under coach Matt Teokotai White, finished third in the 200m individual medley. Her time of 2:22.85 was less than a second off the long-standing national age record set by Carissa Thompson in 1999.
Northland’s Hayley McIntosh from the Northwave club, came closest to another medal, finishing equal fourth in the 16 years 400m freestyle in 4:17.90.
On the opening day McCarthy was ninth in the 200m breaststroke, with 11 Kiwi swimmers making the A finals.
