New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle has added a bronze medal to her gold on day three of the FINA World Short Course Championships in Turkey.
The 25 year old from North Shore club finished just 6/100ths of a second from a second gold medal after leading for much of the way in the final of the 400m freestyle in Istanbul.
Boyle pushed hard to grab the lead mid-race and still led until the final 25m when she was rundown by Melanie Costa Schmid (ESP) and American champion Chloe Sutton in a virtual deadheat. The Spaniard won by 2/100ths of a second from Sutton with Boyle a further 4/100ths of a second back.
Her time of 4:01.24 further lowered the New Zealand record she set during the 800m win yesterday.
Boyle celebrated her 25th birthday today in Europe, with the team presenting her with a special cake to celebrate.
