Teachers from Ohau School near Levin recently participated in the Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Award course to upskill and improve their knowledge and confidence in teaching their students to swim and survive.
The school swim out of Levin Aquatic Centre where the students are all encouraged to participate and learn to keep themselves safer in the water.
In the theory session teachers learnt about health and safety, class management and the importance of structured play before enjoying a pool session where they could put into practise what they had just learnt.
The course offered a great balance for all in attendance as between school teachers, experienced and new swimming teachers and parents wishing to attend to increase their own levels of confidence, there was plenty of knowledge to be shared around.
Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Sarah Gibbison ran the course and was impressed with the passion of the teachers to enhance their students swimming skills through leading by example, role modelling and setting clear expectations for safe behaviours around the water.
