The start of something extraordinary

Hurring visits South Island development swimmers

South Island swimmers who have qualified for Swimming New Zealand’s National Squads have recently had a visit from SNZ High Performance Athlete Development Coach Gary Hurring.

Hurring spent two weeks, from the 12th to 23rd of June, travelling around the South Island visiting clubs and programmes of the development swimmers to observe and offer advice to the swimmers and their coaches.

Topics covered by Hurring during his visits included motivation, goal setting and future direction for swimmers. He also ran skills sessions and was able to provide some coach education.

“It was satisfying for me to see a high level of coaching work being carried out by the South Island coaches that I visited and an abundance of hard working and motivated future international swimmers,” Hurring said.

“It was great to be able to work with these coaches and swimmers and to observe them training in their home environments.”

The North Island is next on Hurring’s tour schedule with their visits planned for after the Rio Olympics.

Following on from his visits Hurring will continue to work with the coaches and swimmers tracking competition results, regularly touching base with coaches to offer support and advice as well as some follow-up visits, national camps and off-shore campaigns.

Clubs and programmes on Hurring’s tour of the South Island were Tasman, JASI, North Canterbury, Wharenui, Selwyn, Aquagym, the Canterbury Platinum and Gold squad, Otago swimming clubs training at the Moana pool programme and the H20 Dreams programme that consists of multiple Southland swimming clubs.
