It was the locals who took charge on the first day of the State New Zealand Division II competition at Waterworld in Hamilton, with Waikato swimmers having a strong start to the week.
St Peters Swimming Academy from Cambridge took the lead on the opening day of the competition for ages 13-18 years with 198 points followed up by Aquabladz New Plymouth on 156 and Coast Swim Club on 155.
The only female to take home two medals on the first day was Anneke Fletcher from ACE Swimming Club in the 16-18 years age group, taking out the 50m butterfly and claiming bronze in the 200m backstroke.
In the boys events Waikato had another stand out swimmer in Thomas Raymond of the Matamata Swimming Club, who along with Jordyn Gadsby from Aquabladz New Plymouth took home a gold and silver for the opening day.
