Counties Manukau swimmer Corey Main was in strong form on the opening day of the Southeastern Conference Championships in Georgia yesterday.
Main, from the Howick Pakuranga club, is on scholarship at the University of Florida, with the conference championships the key lead-in event to the NCAA national college finals.
The specialist backstroker produced a big personal best to lead his college to victory in the 4x200 yard freestyle relay. Main took 2.5 seconds off his previous best to swim 1:34:06 for 200 yards, a converted time that is within half a second of the New Zealand short course record.
Florida won the relay in a new sectional record of 6:13:03 ahead of Auburn and Tennessee.
Main is expected to return for the Commonwealth Games Trials at the State New Zealand Open Championships in April.
