New Zealander Kane Radford finished 19th in the men’s marathon swim today.
Radford, 25, completed the demanding 10km course in 1h 53min 18.7s.
It was a tight race with the top 20 all involved in a virtual bunch finish.
The Rotorua swimmer had managed to swim up to 9th place at the halfway mark where he was over a minute behind the leader.
The winner was Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands in 1h 52min 59.8s, but it required a photo finish before he was given the verdict ahead of Greece’s Spiros Giannotis.
Radford is the first open water swimmer to compete for New Zealand at an Olympic Games.
