Hutt Swimming Club pride themselves on delivering quality skilled coaching whilst introducing local youth to the joy of swimming.
Based at Huia Pool in Wellington the club offer lessons for swimmers from the age of 5 years old and averages approximately 200 members, all of whom are taught by volunteer swim teachers and coaches.
They are also passionate about water safety and survival skill education and helping those who wish to swim competitively to reach their full potential.
The club recently offered training to their coaches with the help of Swimming New Zealand and designed training specific to their needs by seeking feedback from their coaches in regards to what they needed.
Run over two nights, the training included basic drills, the importance of progressions, aquatic readiness, stretching and the qualities of a swimming teacher/coach.
The training was delivered through videos, group brainstorms, dryland drill practise and group discussions. All of the participants had plenty of good ideas to share and discussed helpful tools and tips to help them in their teaching practice.
More than 20 people attended each night and participants commented on feeling more confident in their teaching and feeling excited about trying some new things over the coming weeks.
It was an excellent professional development opportunity for the swim club and it is great to see the swim club valuing the importance of training for their volunteers.
