Plimmerton School in Wellington has found the formula for a sustainable and beneficial learn to swim programme for their students.
The school, which has been part of the Kiwi Swim Safe programme since 2010, uses a mixture of school teacher led lessons and instructor led lessons with teachers also taking part in an annual Kiwi Swim Safe professional development course.
Plimmerton’s learn to swim programme is also complemented by beach education, sailing and stand up paddle boarding sessions each year.
Having their own school pool allows the school great flexibility in their lesson times and it’s not uncommon for the pool to be opened up over lunch time for recreational swimming.
It is also a valued part of the junior school sleep over session where the children get to go for a late night swim before having milo and biscuits around a campfire.
The school also sells keys to the school community as both a fundraising venture and an opportunity for school families to use the pool in their own time.
With not many school pools left in the Wellington region it is great to see Plimmerton have been able to keep theirs running.
Swimming New Zealand looks forward to continuing to work with Plimmerton School over the coming months and wish them all the best for their swimming season.
