Makara School in Wellington has been part of the Kiwi Swim Safe programme since 2013 and are continually looking to improve their swimming programme each year.
This year the school roll has risen again and with two new teachers joining the staff, Makara School identified they needed some more support in their swimming programme and asked Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Sarah to facilitate a workshop.
The teachers were taken through the new Water Skills for Life (WSFL) personal development session which they have linked in easily to their current programme and saw where they could make improvements.
The school regularly participates in personal development with Sarah and enjoy making the most of their school pool during summer, sometimes swimming twice a day.
Despite having regular personal development all teachers commented that the recent session was really helpful and said “It is a great video resource with useful anecdotes too”, “it shows really clear progressions and steps” and that “it was a great refresher”.
Each year the school put on a swimming spectacle for their parents and community to show what they have learnt in their swimming programme. After their latest workshop they are looking forward to showing everyone plenty of new things they have achieved in line with the WSFL competencies.
Well done Makara Model School – we look forward to continuing to work with you over the summer period. If you would like to know more about the Kiwi Swim Safe programme click here.
