The future is well and truly bright for our young New Zealand swim team who once again won a bunch of medals this morning at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Ciara Smith’s form continues to build over the course of the meet. Today she stepped up to the 100m event and won silver in a time of 1:10.72, after winning bronze yesterday in the 50m breaststroke.
Already with three gold medals to his name, Lewis Clareburt then followed suit, in the men’s 400m freestyle to pick up a silver medal in 3:54.15.
“I’ve got a PB in every event so far so I’m pretty stoked with that, there’s been a lot of work go into this,” said Clareburt.
“Being up on the podium is such a great feeling at an international competition, so I’ve just been taking it in and loving it.”
Zac Reid finished in 3:56.36 for 5th place in the same race.
Hannah Bates won her first medal of the games in the 100m women’s butterfly in 1:01.27 for bronze.
Less than 3mins after the race Bates was back on the blocks again, this time in the women’s 200m backstroke final alongside teammate Gina Galloway. Both swimmers put in a valiant effort with Galloway finishing 4th in 2:17.25 and Bates 8th in 2:26.66.
In other results Finn Kennard-Campbell finished 8th in the men’s 200m backstroke in 2:09.31 and the mixed 4X100m freestyle relay team (Clareburt, Prime, Transom, Falconer) finished 4th in their final in 3:37.79.
