Over 100 athletes descended on Moana Pool, Dunedin, to welcome on in the summer.
Over the first weekend of December swimmers competed for top honours at the Otago 12 & under Regional Championships and they delivered some fantastic performances.
There were 278 new personal best times set at this meet, with a total of 219 medals and 214 finalist ribbons being award.
There were several amazing performances at the meet:
10 years & under - Madison Foote (Queenstown Swimming Club), took home 5 regional titles along with five new personal best times and Levi Heffernan (Oamaru Swimming Club) lead the boys with an impressive six titles.
11 years – Caitlin Hewson (Zenith Swimming Club) departed with five titles and six personal best times, Morgan Baillie (Oamaru Swimming Club) took out a clean swipe in breaststroke events adding to his six-title haul.
12 years – Elenoa Asi (Oamaru Swimming Club) showed her strength across all breaststroke distances taking home five regional titles with fellow team mate Samuel Petrie taking home 4 titles including at an impressive 16+ second personal time in the 200m individual medley.
Due to depth restrictions at the facility, relay events this year were increased to 4 x 100 meters, dominated by Oamaru Swimming Club taking out both the freestyle and medley relay events.
Fantastic swimming across both sessions, a real credit to this region’s athletes, coaches and parents, and a testament to your hard work and dedication, congratulations!
A massive thank you to all volunteers and officials for their efforts this weekend; without these people, meets such as this one would never take place, so recognition is in order.
Officials are a fundamental aspect of swimming, and the more officials we have the more smoothly meets run.
If you are interested in becoming an official, contact us at soswimmingotago@gmail.com and we can begin your training (if necessary for position) as soon as possible.
Our next event is the Otago 13 & over Regional Championships being held from 17 January 2018, in the meantime check out some of the imagines taken over the weekend on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/swimmingotago/
