Gichard sole New Zealand swimmer in action tonight

Hawkes Bay swimmer Bobbi Gichard will be the sole New Zealander in the pool on the second night of the Youth Olympic Games in China today.

The 14-year-old will contest the final of the 100m backstroke, the first Kiwi swimmer to qualify for a final in Nanjing.

Today teammates Gabrielle Fa’amausili and Michael Mincham did not advance from the morning heats. Fa’amausili clocked a solid 58.34, under her qualifying time, in the 100m freestyle which was 26^th fastest.

Mincham was 16^th fastest in heats of the 200m freestyle in 1:52.42, well under his qualifying time.

Teammate Jacob Garrod scratched from the 200m individual medley to rest a niggling ankle injury, and to concentrate on his main event, the 200m breaststroke.
