Hawkes Bay swimmer Bobbi Gichard will be the sole New Zealander in the pool on the second night of the Youth Olympic Games in China today.
The 14-year-old will contest the final of the 100m backstroke, the first Kiwi swimmer to qualify for a final in Nanjing.
Today teammates Gabrielle Fa’amausili and Michael Mincham did not advance from the morning heats. Fa’amausili clocked a solid 58.34, under her qualifying time, in the 100m freestyle which was 26th fastest.
Mincham was 16th fastest in heats of the 200m freestyle in 1:52.42, well under his qualifying time.
Teammate Jacob Garrod scratched from the 200m individual medley to rest a niggling ankle injury, and to concentrate on his main event, the 200m breaststroke.
