Olympian Melissa Ingram began her international campaign with a silver medal at the opening day of the FINA World Cup in Dubai.
Ingram finished second in the women’s 200m backstroke in 2:05.22 and in doing so the North Shore swimmer was two seconds under the qualifying time for December’s World Short Course Championships.
The 27 year old led for all but the last 15m in the final before she was edged out by Ukraine’s Darya Zevina but produced a strong performance in her first-up swim in the series which includes eight rounds in Europe, Middle East and Asia.
Her fellow North Shore clubmate Glenn Snyders claimed his first podium of the series with third place in the final of the 50m breaststroke.
He was fourth fastest in qualifying and went one place better in the final in 27.03 which was only 18/100th of a second outside his national record.
Snyders was also seventh in the final of the 200m breaststroke in 2:10.38.
Of the other New Zealanders Australian-based Christchurch swimmer Cameron Simpson was eighth in the final of the 100m freestyle in 48.85s, while Michael Jack (Taranaki) was 10th in the 400m freestyle in 3:54.35.
The second night of the opening round is tomorrow with the second round in Doha at the weekend.
