The start of something extraordinary

2014 New Zealand Secondary School Championships Preview

A total 322 swimmers from 100 schools will contest the fourth New Zealand Secondary School Championships at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre starting on Saturday.

Napier Girls will defend the girls’ trophy after claiming the inaugural trophy at last year’s event ahead of Baradene College and Pukekohe High School.

After a hotly contested battle with Auckland Grammar School last year, Wellington College will look to retain the boy’s title for the fourth consecutive year.

Competition will be wide open with several leading swimmers competing in the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii over the same weekend.

Other top school age swimmers, including the likes of Gabrielle Fa’amausili and Bobbi Gichard who recently competed at the Youth Olympics, will also be missing as they look ahead to the New Zealand Short Course Championships which run directly after the Secondary Schools event.

Para swimmers will again compete after their successful addition in to last year’s secondary schools programme with the line-up including Daniel Gaualofa who recently competed at the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships.

The competition runs from 30 August to 1 September at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie with morning sessions from 9am and evening sessions beginning at 4pm.
