Sophie Pascoe claims 3 World Records and 4 Gold Medals at 2019 Singapore World Series

The Singapore leg of the 2019 World Para Swimming World Series turned out to be a superb outing for Sophie Pascoe. The 26-year-old was no doubt the star, claiming three new world records and gained four gold medals overall.

The multiple paralympic champion clocked the S9 World Record for the Women's 100m Freestyle, with a time of 1:00.36s and the S9 World Record for the Women's 50m Freestyle, with a time of 27.69s.

Pascoe touched home in 2:25.22s and broke the SM9 World Record for the Women's 200m Individual Medley, taking top position ahead of Russia's Valeriia Shabaline and Jessica Long of United States of America.

“I didn’t actually expect that time. I was expecting something about a high 2:26,” said Pascoe, a nine-time Paralympic champion. “My training is working. It’s such a good feeling to know that what I’ve been doing the past few months is working, and to know that I’m not in peak condition yet.”

The veteran of three Paralympics so far said she is pleased with how she has been able to control her competition jitters better in Singapore, which should come in handy as she prepares for the New Zealand nationals and world championships. 

She said: “I’ve had a good couple of years. I wanted 2019 to be my year and obviously, 2020 to be the ultimate, so I’m looking forward to it.” 

Pascoe accounted for four of New Zealand’s golds, while Cameron Leslie added a fifth in the men’s 50m backstroke.
