Swimming New Zealand is excited to announce the 2021 and 2022 national event calendar. The events are spread across 5 key locations across the country in 2021, held in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Dunedin and Timaru. The 2021 domestic calendar has been set in alignment with the findings and recommendations from the competition structure review, providing 3 distinctive training cycles and a significant racing opportunity at the end of the training cycle. Another change from the review is the inclusion of the 17-18 age group at the Aon NZ Swimming Championships (formerly known as Opens). Following the removal of the 17-18 age group from Aon NAGs, age group para swimmers now have the opportunity to compete at the event.
The domestic calendar is set to play a key role in athlete preparations for the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, and likewise in 2022 with a jam-packed international calendar to prepare for.
The calendar also reflects a major focus on providing more opportunities for rangatahi, with the addition of Secondary School competitions providing a fun and engaging swimming environment to further promote participation, with the 5 Secondary School open water events to be hosted in conjunction with the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series. Similarly, the Junior Festival will take place as a roadshow with 4 events on consecutive weekends in their respective zones across the country, hosted in larger venues to better accommodate the swimmers and their families during the event.
