Earlier this year Ashburton Community Swimming Pool sent their new instructors to a Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher Course.
The instructors have now completed their assessments with the team at Ashburton Community Swimming Pool pleased with the course and the results.
Swim school co-ordinator and Swimming New Zealand Evidence Gatherer, Stacey Hoets said the new resources in the course were really good and allowed them to have some good sit down conversations with the new instructors about what was required, with each new swim teacher working through their workbook as part of their induction.
The minimum training period of three months gave the new swim teachers time to process their learning and ensured consistency. It also helped to highlight what areas they needed more training on.
“The improvement of the teachers over the past five months has definitely showed,” Hoets said.
Hoets added that while there was extra paper work she didn’t mind it and found it easier to identify the strengths of the trainee and provided another opportunity to give feedback.
“The whole process really worked for us at Ashburton Community Pool.”
