Children from Te Waotu School in the Waikato Region have been learning about water safety with Swimming New Zealand Education Advisor Wendy Smith.
Smith recently visited the school to talk about how to keep safe in and around water by making the right choices and knowing your own limitations around bodies of water.
The students practised dry land water safety swimming skills like sculling, rotations, breaststroke and survival backstroke.
They also looked at scenarios that could occur around water such as falling off a wharf whilst fishing, a boat sinking, river crossings and rips.
The students also took turns lifting buckets filled with dry clothes and then wet clothes to see the difference in weight and discussed how this would affect them if they accidently fell in water.
Te Waotu School is a small rural school with a role of around 120 students.
