The famed Wharenui Swimming Club, that developed some of New Zealand’s greats, has continued to dominate on the second day of the New Zealand Division II Swimming Competition in Dunedin.
Three hundred swimmers from 86 clubs around the country are competing in the long course (50m) competition at Moana Pool for swimmers aged from 13 years.
Wharenui club lead the combined team competition on 753 points, well clear of the local Neptune club on 353, the TBSS Central City club from Auckland on 312, Tawa on 288 and Howick Pakuranga on 267.
In the girls’ competition 14 year old Elen Barr (Dolphin Club, Manawatu) leads the individual standings with three golds and a bronze, with wins on day two in the 200m individual medley and 50m breaststroke.
Her tally of four medals is matched by 15 year old Teigan Tarapi (Neptune) and 14 year old Kate Blincoe (Palmerston North). They both won the 200m freestyle final with Tarapi winning the 200m individual medley and Blincoe finishing second in the same event.
Another to impress was 16 year old Tayla Graham (Waimea, Nelson) who also gained wins in the 200m individual medley and 50m breaststroke.
In the boys’ competition 17 year old Ben Sutton continued his excellent form for Wharenui with a win in the 200m freestyle and second in the 200m individual medley to push his individual tally to four medals.
Timaru’s Riley Taylor, 14, has three gold medals with a win in the 200m freestyle with the competition widespread with 22 boys winning gold medals from 32 finals decided so far.
It is a similar story in the girls’ competition with 23 winners on top of the podium in the eight events to date.
Public are welcome to attend the competition which runs until Saturday, with heats from 9am and finals from 6pm each day.
