Fox Glacier School are seeing the benefits of giving students time in the water as well as developing their own aquatic education knowledge.
Students from the West Coast, South Island school spend 45 minutes each day over the summer terms in the schools pool learning to swim and gaining confidence in the water.
The school are also pro-active in seeking out personal development sessions and poolside support from Swimming New Zealand to help improve their skills around aquatic education.
A Kiwi Swim Safe school since 2011, they are also great at incorporating water safety into the classroom with many activities linking into other curriculum areas.
Swimming New Zealand Education Operations Manager Tracey Hickman has been working with the school for the past four years and has been able to see the improvement of the children’s swimming ability.
The time students are able to spend in the water along with the experience behind their staff can be seen in their swimming sports results as the school took out first place at a recent meet with other local schools.
The teachers and the school also are great supporters of students getting out and having a go in other swimming competitions.
One of their students they recently encouraged to take this step was Zac Scott. He competed in the West Coasts very first Special Olympics event at the Grey District Aquatic Centre where he won the 15m freestyle race.
