Tasman swimmer claims gold at Aussie Age Champs

Tasman swimmer Sam McKenzie has claimed a gold medal on the second day of the Australian Age Group Championships in Sydney.

The 15 year old from Nelson took out the 100m freestyle final in 52.06s, having already broken the national age group record in the morning heat, 0.24s inside the previous record.

McKenzie won a medal in the same race last year, when he broke the national 14 years record.

Other finalists on day two were Ruby Adsett (Napier Aquahawks) who was sixth in the 14 years 800m freestyle in 9:06.03, ahead of Mya Rasmussen (Kiwi West Aquatics, Palmerston North) who was 10th in 9:09.90.

Auckland’s Annabelle Paterson (United) was eighth in the 16 years 400m freestyle in 4:24.74 while Joshua Gilbert (Stratford) was eighth in the 13 years 200m individual medley in 2:18.90.

The championships continue until Saturday.
