Koru the Kiwi recently visited Dyer Street School in Lower Hutt, Wellington for a special assembly to celebrate another successful swimming season by the school.
The school has a roll of 240 students, all of whom have just completed eight swimming sessions at Huia Pool.
Swimming is a very important part of the curriculum at Dyer Street School, and the teachers are very passionate about their children spending as much time as possible in the water, as well as their teachers receiving professional development at the same time.
With many new teachers starting at the school over the past year, the school are ready for another State Kiwi Swim Safe professional development session early in 2014.
The school became a State Kiwi Swim Safe School in 2010, and have lived the values of this programme since this time, with students being responsible for managing themselves effectively both in and out of the water, and supporting their peers in striving to be their very best.
Koru was welcomed into the school with a lovely version of the national anthem being sung. All the students wanted to see how fluffy he was and ask lots of questions about him.
The school enjoyed the little dance that Koru performed, and they are all looking forward to receiving their State Kiwi Swim Safe certificates over the coming weeks.
Thank you to Dyer Street School for the very warm welcome we received, and we look forward to working with you again in 2014.
