Porirua schools dive into swimming sports

About 80 pupils from five Porirua schools took part in a sports day at Cannons Creek Pool in Porirua on Friday the 13th of September.

The day proved to be not so unlucky for Rangikura School who won the primary inter-schools swimming sports. It was the first such event held for several years after swimming was removed from the primary school curriculum.

The event included representatives from Te Kura Maori O Porirua, Cannons Creek School, Holy Family School, Corinna School, and Rangikura School.

Students participated in 25m and 50m events before finishing the day with school relays for year 5/6 students, and then year 7/8 students. There were 34 races, divided by year level and gender.

Local swimming club Porirua City Aquatics officiated the day in what was a very well-run event. Students and parent helpers assisted by volunteering as time keepers.

Schools were awarded points based on swimmers placing’s in each of the events. All placing’s were recognised with between one and five points being awarded respectively.

Rangikura School was followed on the final points table by Te Kura Maori o Porirua, Holy Family, Corinna, and Cannons Creek, which entered two pupils.

The Top School trophy was kindly donated by Porirua City Aquatics.

Te Kura Maori O Porirua won both relay events, and were awarded certificates and State Insurance swimming bags for their efforts.

The inter-school event was a joint venture by Swim Wellington, Swimming New Zealand and Dash.

It was a great day and an excellent example of many sectors of the swimming community working together to support such an event.
